George William Schafer VIEW PROFILE

George (Bill) William Schafer, age 62, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, died at home on Thursday, September 6, 2007. Bill was born on April 23, 1945 in Tacoma to George L. and Mary Schafer, and graduated from Mt Tahoma High School in 1963. He married Rosemary Elaine Bomberry in Waukegan, IL on February 22, 1969. Bill started his nautical career at the age of 17 when he joined the Tacoma Sea Cadet and then enlisted in the Navy, spending most of his career in the Submarine Force. He also earned a Master's degree in Human Resource Management from Chapman University. Bill retired from the Navy in 1983 as a Lieutenant and continued his federal service employment, ending it in May of this year as the Executive Director of Submarine Learning for the Navy. Bill was a member of the Navy League, an honorary member of the Olympic College Foundation, and a longtime resident of Kitsap County. He will be dearly missed by his wife Rose; their 2 daughters, Lisa M. Schafer of University Place and Dawn V. Fairless and husband Paul of Kingston; his grandchildren Kaity (12), Jessie (5), Cheyenne (4), Lakota (2) and Hunter (1); and his sister Sherri Forch of Ruston. Bill will also be greatly missed by all his extended family, the Cramers of Port Orchard, the Lowerys of University Place, and many dear lifelong friends and work associates. Memorial services with full military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 14, 2007 at Haven of Rest Funeral Home, Gig Harbor (253) 851-9991. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of George W. Schafer to the Olympic College Foundation (360) 475-7120 or the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
